How to Tell a High-Efficiency Gas Furnace from a Mid-Efficiency Furnace

by David Campbell

It’s super simple to determine with just a glance the difference between a high-efficiency gas furnace and standard-efficiency furnace. Just look at the exhaust. If it’s a single steel exhaust pipe it is a standard or mid-efficiency. If it has a pvc exhaust it is the higher efficiency version.

The higher efficient furnaces are able to extract additional heat form the combustion process and as a result their exhaust is cooler and can be vented through pvc. If you have an older furnace that is rated at 80% efficiency one way to look at is 80% of the fuel you burn heats the house and 20% goes out the exhaust. Logically, a furnace rated at 95% is going to save you fuel costs. These furnaces do cost more initially but they make up for it over time.

If you are considering a real estate purchase in the Beavercreek, Bellbrook, Kettering or surrounding Dayton, OH areas it is important to have an agent on your side that knows how these systems work.  Reach out, I’ll be glad to help.
