Brick Ledge. What is It?

by David Campbell

I once had a client fall in love with a home but it had wood siding and they asked me if the wood could be removed and brick siding added instead. The answer is "Yes", but it would be very expensive because the home was not built with a brick ledge. This ledge is about 4 or 5 inches wide and formed into the foundation when it is poured.  The ledge is where the first course of bricks is laid and it carries the weight of the wall.

I've seen it done where pieces of angle iron are bolted to the bottom of foundation to substitute as a brick ledge. It does not look aesthetically pleasing because the angle iron hold the brick out away from the foundation, not flush with the edge  as you would have with a true brick ledge that was originally formed into the foundation. Due to this and the added expense you are better off shopping for a brick home rather than trying to convert one.
